Mason’s Bear

My best friend is pregnant with a baby boy, Mason, and is due in November. Her baby shower is in early September, and I finally finished a few gifts for her. She requested a sweater, so is expecting that, but I made a bear and a blanket for an added surprise.

This pattern makes a really cute bear. It uses short rows to create a pudgy tummy and 3-dimensional face. I love it. The only thing that disappointed me is the gauge–at this gauge, the stitches are more open and the stuffing shows. It doesn’t come out, just shows through, which I don’t really like. I’m going to give it to her anyway. If I make this pattern in the past, I might try tinkering with it to create a tighter gauge project while still getting a good size bear.

I bought this yarn on clearance online as part of another yarn purchase in order to use up a gift card. I tried knitting a baby hat with it, but didn’t like the result. It’s perfect for a bear because it’s a little soft and is machine washable.

a bear for a baby

chubby = cute
